Certain external factors also contribute to senescence:
Free radicals—toxic oxidizing molecules produced by the body following assaults from the environment—affect cellular membranes and genetic material.
Toxic substances like lead, steel, mercury, and aluminum cause some deterioration of neurons.
Stress, with its oxidizing effect, also takes a toll.
Certain sociocultural factors also come into play. Western societies do not value old age, which they associate with dependence, incompetence, and senility. Once isolated in this way, the aged individual loses all initiative. His or her individual experience, which has been inscribed in the brain permanently in the connections among neurons, becomes impoverished.
Synaptic efficiency relies on the activity of the neurons located throughout the synapse. This functional cerebral plasticity is the result of neurobiological and environmental interactions, so a decrease in these interactions (isolation and boredom) leads to decreased neuronal activity and results in lower synaptic efficiency.
Cellular aging begins in the septum pellucidum, located within the hippocampus, and in the temporal lobe. In these two zones are the nervous cells that are the most vulnerable to ischemia, which causes memory problems after or during a traumatic event. Furthermore, it has been observed that if the functioning of the hippocampus is impeded, there is a loss of spatial memory.
Cerebral aging is measured by the reduction of the brain’s weight, neuronal loss, neurofibrillary deterioration, senile plaques, and a change in cholinergic function, resulting in cognitive difficulties.
